Plasma Deferral: What It Actually Means and How to Avoid It

Getting deferred is frustrating, especially when you're not sure why. Centers don't always explain the full picture. Here's what's actually happening and what you can do about it.

The Most Common Deferral Reasons

Protein levels too low is the number one cause. Centers require your total protein to be between 6.0-9.0 g/dL. If you're eating mostly carbs and not enough protein in the 24-48 hours before donation, you're risking a deferral.

Hematocrit Issues

Your hematocrit (percentage of red blood cells) needs to fall within a specific range — usually 38-54% for most centers. Dehydration raises it, which can disqualify you. Drink at least 32oz of water the morning of your donation, ideally more the day before.

Blood Pressure and Pulse

High blood pressure or irregular pulse readings cause temporary deferrals. If you're consistently borderline, avoid caffeine for 2-3 hours before your appointment and sit quietly for 5-10 minutes before screening.

What to Do After a Deferral

Ask specifically which value failed. You have the right to know. If it's protein, increase your intake — eggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, cottage cheese — in the 48 hours before your next attempt. If it's hematocrit, focus on hydration and avoid strenuous exercise the day before.
